Chapter Twenty One

Leo was just setting down the coffee cups on the bar when Sammie appeared.

“Hey, Peg,” Sammie said, before turning to Leo. “I'm just heading up to the RV park for a couple of hours. I'll be back for my shift.”

Leo nodded. During the past week, Sammie had made a point of spending at least every other night in the RV, true to her word. And she went to the park at least once a day. Leo was grateful for this, thankful that Sammie was keeping her word, and thankful that they were taking things slow, that there was still time to be herself.

Not that she had the faintest idea what was going on here.

Her body craved Sammie's. She could look at her face all day and hear her laugh and her voice and smell her scent and everything else.

But there was something holding her back, a thin rope tying her to the past, warning her to be careful. Though Sammie had given her no reason to be careful.

And now Sammie was stepping closer and Leo's heart beat harder and her skin prickled and she just knew that Sammie was going to brush her lips with her own and... And Peg was sitting right there. She drew back as though shocked and Sammie froze for a moment. They looked at each other, Leo begging Sammie to understand with her eyes.

Finally, Sammie nodded.

“See you later then,” was all she said. “Bye, Peg!”

And she was walking out and Leo was praying that Peg hadn't noticed anything amiss.

“Business is booming then,” Peg said, apparently oblivious to anything but the coffee cup in front of her.

“It is that,” Leo said in relief. “Well, for the time being. Sammie's got some ideas. She knows what she's doing, I'll give her that.”

“So the rent increase should be no big deal?”

Leo puffed out a breath and shrugged. “It's a stretch. Still a stretch. But if things keep getting better, then no, it shouldn't be a big deal.”

Peg nodded. “You need to get your bid out for the place next door then.”

Leo paused, cup half-way to her mouth. “No, Peg. Not part of the plan.”

Peg shook her head. “You're not going to have much choice.”

“And why's that?” she asked, putting the cup down again.

“It's business 101,” Peg said, with a wink. “Small businesses have a natural ceiling. You can grow and grow and grow but at some point you're going to reach that ceiling which will stop you growing any more. If you want to grow bigger than that, well, you need a bigger pot. Just like replanting a seedling.”

“And I'm the seedling in this scenario?”

“Damn straight you are.” Peg looked around. “You've got a nice little business here, Leo. You can do alright. But alright isn't good enough. Not when there's more than yourself to look after. You'll need more space. Snap up the place next door, knock through, get yourself a decent kitchen, and start feeding people. That's what I'd do.”

It took Leo's brain a millisecond or two to catch up.
